Description 1763 DEED FOR THE UPPER WEST SIDE OF MANHATTAN.The most expensive real estate in the United States lies within the 153 acres that this deed encompasses. Please Google "Miles Johnson Owns the Upper West Side". There are 20 photos below. The last two photos show the actual measurements in chains and links converted to feet. This is the deed from Oliver DeLancey to Charles Apthorp for the Apthorp Farm, now known as the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and can be seen on the appropriate map in "Iconography of Manhattan' and consists of approximately 153 acres extending from W.77th St. northward to W.89th, and from the Hudson River running eastward to what is the site of the old reservoir in Central Park.

Members of New York's early wealthy and notable families have signed the deed (Oliver DeLancey and his wife Phila Franks DeLancey, Phila's father Jacob Franks, Charles Apthorp, John Watts, Robert Benson, Henry Cuyler). The DeLancey fortune was estimated to be the largest in New York City, at 100,000 pounds ($26,000,000 today).
The deed is on large 23" x 29" vellum (treated animal skin, most likely either calf, sheep, or goat).
The deed includes precise dimensions of the property involved: "...parcel of land situate lying and being in the Outward of the City of New York on the East Side of the Hudson River at a place commonly called Bloomendall..." "...beginning at the Bank of the Hudson's River at the Northwest corner of Dyckman's Land", followed by 11 lines of the land's dimensions in chains and links (each line is 28 inches long), and ending with "to the place of the beginning being a rock at the edge of the bank marked with the letter "A".
The deed is in very good condition, being very legible, and has the two original wax seals and signatures of Phila and Oliver DeLancey still attached.
Most of the signers owned slave ships: Charles Apthorp, the DeLancey family, John Watts. Phila's father, Jacob Franks, owned the slave ships 'Abigal' and 'Charlotte', co-owned with Moses and Sam Levy. The Franks family was one of New York's earliest notable Jewish merchant families. Owning slavers was one thing, but having a daughter marry a non-Jew was another. After Phila married Oliver DeLancey, her mother never spoke to her again.

A binder containing the histories of the DeLancey, Apthorp, and Franks familes is included.
The deed is in a Delaware bank, so please make an appointment for viewing at least 2 weeks in advance.
