Braintree’s Cochato Club
For much of its nearly nine decades, the Cochato Club on Elm Street was the place to be for bowling tournaments, Friday night card games and Saturday night dinner dances. But dwindling membership spelled the end of what was believed to be the town’s oldest social club, The Queen of Clubs.
The club was formed in March of 1899, and membership was limited to people living within a 5-mile radius of the club. The club at one time boasted 800 members, and, after the 5-mile rule was lifted, it had members from around the South Shore and Boston. On Friday nights, a group of men would get together and play cards in a small room that contained two rows of 2-foot-tall lockers that held their liquor bottles. Its main function room could accommodate 150 people. Dinner dances were held on Saturday nights, with couples dancing to the music of a three-piece band. And there were three candlepin bowling lanes in the basement. The walls were covered with wooden boards bearing the names of past tournament winners dating back to 1906. The basement also contained a Coke machine that had been modified to purvey another product. A paper sign read, “50¢ Cold Beer.” The club also sponsored family dinners and children’s parties, game nights, costume parties and private functions during its September-through-June season.
With the club’s membership down to about 70 people, many of whom had retired and moved to Florida, the clubhouse was sold to the Braintree Elks lodge in 1987. The lodge occupied the building for nearly three decades until it merged with the Weymouth lodge. The building was sold to a developer and is part of the 12-unit Riverwalk condominium development.

MdArchitectural Rescue is a different type of recycling company. We have operated in Baltimore and surrounding areas since 1996. After starting out rescuing fireplace mantles and cast iron door locks from construction dumpsters, we have opened our eyes to may types of waste that are often over looked and fall through the cracks. Our focus is and always will be vintage items of the highest quality. But with our eyes now open we put a lot of effort in bringing you high end collectibles from every industry available and at a very reasonable price. All our items are salvaged and are for the most part American Made. One week we could be in an old School, Brewery, Factory, and the following weekat a Shipyard or Power plant, you just never know. Also, one day we may be removing Vintage lighting, the next day Signs and Vintage blueprints and the following day cleaning out a machine shop or high end parts room. We literally have NO idea what we have coming around corner, so make sure you add us to your favorites and check back often.
