Happiness, Vermont

Welcome to Happiness, Vermont!

Admittedly, not a real place. More like a state of mind.

Understand that we at Virtual Vermont do live in Vermont, and have done so for a long time, one being a NATIVE, the other a TRANSPLANT of more than forty years.

Ancient Native scultures

Note that simply being born in Vermont does not make you a Native ("Just 'cause the cat has her kittens in the oven don't make 'em biscuits!"). Depending on who you're talking to, one must be second or third generation born on this soil (some purists would go for being able to trace your ancestors back to the original Green Mountain Boys). A Transplant, on the other hand, is a non-Native who decided to stay long enough ago that roots are firmly established (a Transplant's grandchildren will be called Native, if everyone follows the rules). Anybody "just visiting", no matter how often you do it, is a FLATLANDER.

Native or Not, we love Vermont. That's why we're still here. There's just something about this place that makes us want to stay, though most of us would be hard-pressed to give you a very detailed answer as to why.

The Earl Welch Memorial Spring

Whatever it is, it overcomes the mind-numbing cold we sometimes have to deal with while brushing six inches of flurries off our cars; it overcomes the "Cabin Fever" some experience about mid-February; it overcomes the occasional oppressive humidity in summer and the herds of four-engine mosquitos and No-See-Ums (Avon's "Skin-So-Soft" is a big seller here). Whatever it is, it makes it worth being here.

The fact is, what makes us want to stay here is Happiness itself. Happiness at being able to get to work without dealing with city traffic as the rest of the world knows it (unless you live in Burlington, which is another story altogether). Happiness is living in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Happiness is being able to enjoy a specialness about Vermont during each of the seasons, year in, year out. Happiness isn't a place in Vermont. Happiness is Vermont.

We hope that you will find something of interest here in Happiness. The humor, the food, the events, the beauty, and the uniqueness of Vermont. Know that we appreciate your being here, and being able to share Vermont with you.
