Often confused with Pittsford, also in Rutland County, which was granted by Benning Wentworth twenty years earlier. The only similarity is in the names of the two towns, even though one is on the west side of Chittenden town and the other is on the east.
In town they say that the name of Pittsfield was chosen because some of the proprietors had come from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where that town had been named for the elder William Pitt, as was Pittsford. The only real village the town ever had is Pittsfield, located on Vermont Route 100 on the extreme eastern side.
